These mats are engineered to eliminate static electricity from both the mat’s surface and individuals standing on it. Embedded with conductive materials, the mat effectively channels static charges away from personnel and equipment by directing them to ground. This is typically achieved using a floor mat ground cord connected to a grounded point, such as the center screw of an electrical outlet. For the system to function properly, users must wear ESD-safe footwear—like heel grounders or ESD shoes—ensuring static is transferred from the body to the mat and safely discharged. Without proper footwear, static may remain on the individual, compromising the protection. ESD floor mats are essential for safeguarding sensitive electronic components, preventing costly damage, and ensuring compliance with ANSI / ESD S20.20 standards.
